Benson Done.

Cedric Benson needs season ending surgery for the ankle injury he sustained this past Sunday against the Broncos.

Coach Lovie Smith has stated already that Adrian Peterson (not the good one, the other one) will step up into the starters role with Garrett Wolfe as the backup.  The question for us is:  what can we expect out of Peterson?

The answer is:  that depends.

Here is what we know about the the Bears – they haven’t cleared a whole lot of room for their RBs this season.  Benson has generally had a tough time of it so far this year and Peterson only averaging 3.6 yards per carry thus far this season.

So, no value for you, right?  Not so fast, Sparky.  If you are in a league that gives you points for receptions, you might have a pretty good find on your hands – one that other owners might not realize.

Peterson has only played part time with Benson getting the majority of the snaps.  But even in that part time play, Peterson is tied for 10th in the league among RB passing target.  He has been targeted with  5 passes or more 4 times this year in that part time play.

The Bears have the Giants, Skins, Vikings and Packers left to go.  The Vikings are the worst pass defense in the league while the others are middle of the road.

In a point per reception league, it wouldn’t be crazy to see a couple 15 point weeks for Peterson the rest of the way.  If you have a need at RB, you could probably do worse down the stretch.

Priest Calls it a Career

Fantasy Impact:  High

Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes, noting health concerns, has decided to call it a career today – and a pretty good career at that.  Kudos to Holmes for going on out on his own terms with his health intact and his wallet fat.

With Larry Johnson still down, that leaves the Chefs (great googly-moogly!) thin at RB.   So, who is your guy?  Kolby Smith, that’s who.  Now, it’s good to note that Kolby Smith has, for all intents and purposes, sucked the high hard one so far.  Ten attempts, 19 yards – the math isn’t that hard to do here – that’s 1.9 yards a carry.

But, it’s also very good to note that the Chefs remaining schedule is pretty weak.  Oakland, San Diego, at Denver, Tennessee, at Detroit and at the Jets (though, only if your league plays games through week 17).  The only good rush defenses of that group are Tennessee, ranked 5th in the NFL and Detroit ranked 8th.  San Diego, the Jets, Denver and Oakland are ranked 23rd, 29th, 30th and 31st, respectively.

If you can grab Smith, you have a back that has some pretty good match ups down the stretch.  Plus, it appears like Dwayne Bowe and Brodie Croyle are building legitimate chemistry.  If they can continue to build upon these last two games (since Croyle has started) it will open up the running game even more.

Smith is available on most leagues waiver wire.  Get your claim in and see what he can do, especially if you are light at RB.
